The Price of Sugar
The Price of Sugar follows the story of Father Christopher Hartley, a charismatic Spanish priest, who is determined to improve the slave-like conditions of the Haitian immigrants working on the sugar cane plantations of the Dominican Republic. In the process he challenges powerful interests. The Vicini family, who own some of the sugar plantations on which the film was shot, filed a lawsuit against the filmmakers in an attempt to block the film's release! Narrated by the actor Paul Newman, The Price of Sugar raises key questions about where the products we consume originate and at what human cost they are produced. It also shows the grim and desperate plight of the Haitians, a reality hidden from the view of the tourist filled beaches of the Dominican Republic.
